EPCRA Conference 2011:

University of Latvia, Riga, Latvia, 2 – 5 November, 2011

The Church and the Spirit

We are pleased to invite you to the joint conference of the European Pentecostal Charismatic Research Association and the Faculty of Theology of the University of Latvia. We are an open forum of researchers interested in current developments and challenges facing the Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements and their relevance for the churches and society in the 21rst century.

The conference theme will focus on the relationship between ecclesiology and pneumatology, the nature of the Church and the work of the Holy Spirit. Churches and movements emphasizing the work of God’s Spirit are often considered as not paying enough attention to the nature and role of the church, the household of God. On the other hand, historic churches and denominations are often prone to be more mindful of structures and issues of governance and thus neglect the move of the Spirit or the role of charismatic gifting for the renewal of the church. The question arises: What can be learned from each other’s insights and what are the common challenges that lie ahead?

We have invited representatives of different Christian traditions and professional backgrounds, from Europe and overseas, to reflect on this theme with special regard to what Pentecostalism and the charismatic movement can contribute to the discussion, and what the historic churches can share from their rich traditions. The papers will look at various sides of the issues drawing from areas of theological studies, church history, pastoral ministry, intercultural relations, Biblical studies, anthropology and other disciplines. We also look forward to papers that are interdisciplinary in nature, incorporating for instance sociological, economic, and political issues. If you would like to present a paper yourself, please contact the organizer directly (see email given below).
